There are three types of UV rays...

UVA rays age skin cells and can damage their DNA.  These rays are linked to long-term skin damage such as wrinkles, but they are also thought to play a role in some skin cancers.  Most tanning beds give off large amounts of UVA, which has been found to increase skin cancer risk.

UVB rays can directly damage skin cells' DNA, and are the main rays that cause sunburns.  They are also thought to cause most skin cancers.

UVC rays don't get through our atmosphere and are not in sunlight.  They are not normally a cause of skin cancer. 

So if you are feeling a little pale, don't spend hours in the sun or days in the tanning bed to get that perfect tan.  Get a spray airbrush tan and your skin will thank you.

I've been asked multiple times what the difference is between airbrush and spray tanning. First off, an airbrush tan is not a spray tan or spray booth tan.  A spray tan or spray booth tan is an automatic spray booth.  The tanning spray booth only uses one type of solution for every skin tone.  A gallon of solution is poured into the booth and you have to move your body every which way to make sure the spray is getting in all the areas of your body.  An airbrush tan is completely different. A trained professional looks at your skin to determine what type of solution bets fits your skin tone.  They spray every area of your body.  This is the same way that all of our Hollywood stars have their tans applied, with care and precision.

TOCCO DEL SOLE-SPRAY TANNING, FRISCO, TX "HOW TO REMOVE OLD SUNLESS TAN FROM YOUR SKIN"

Here is a great sunless tanning tip.  When you go in to have a spray/airbrush tan applied you want your skin to be like a clean slate.  I recommend a great exfoliate (I sell a great one in my studio).  Fill your bathtub up with warm water and baby oil.  Soak for at least 10-15 minutes.  Have a glass of wine and make this your relaxation time.  Use your exfoliate to get all the dead skin off, then use a damp wash cloth to scrub the leftover sunless tan from your body.  Be sure and get your feet and in between your toes.  I recommend doing this the day BEFORE your next airbrush tanning session.  :)

Growing up in the 1980's I was a sun and tanning bed worshipper.  Loved my tans, but it came with a price.  I was diagnosed 4 different times with Basil Cell Carcinoma.  The dermatologist told me it was due to overexposure to the UV rays.  Oh, I still enjoyed the sun, but was never without my sunscreen. Vitamin D from the sun is great for you, so the sun shouldn't scare you, just wear your sunscreen!  When spray, or airbrush tanning became available, boy was I excited.  Now I get to have my glorious tan year round!  I like to teach my clients about proper skin care, and offer them an alternative to the sun.

So many clients ask me how can they make their airbrush tan last longer.  One thing I tell them is to buy a great tan extending lotion.  The one I offer my clients is amazing.  It has just a touch of DHA and a great moisturizer.  If you use it twice a day, you will get longer results.  Another good trick is to get a good electric razor for your legs.  When you shave with water and soap you are taking off the very top layer of skin on your legs therefore taking off your tan.  Use an electric razor everyday or every other day for "touch ups" and you will find your tan will last longer on your legs.
